Church Roof Replacement

Project Overview: In September 2021, the church roof sustained damage after Hurricane Ida when a company sent to tarp the damaged bell tower instead nailed tarp to the entire (undamaged) church roof, compromising the entire roof and requiring total replacement.

Finances: estimated around $100,000, depending on damages; should be covered by the roofing company on account of their error.

Status Updates:

  • March 17, 2023 - Click here to read Father Brent’s update letter.

  • September 19, 2022 - We are officially in litigation with FPS Roofing and their subcontractors for the damages caused to the roof and the cost of the lightning protection requiring re-certification after they damaged the roof. It is unsure how long this will go on, but experts in such matters have said it may well drag on for several years. In the meantime, we have a new roof and lightning protection and we ask your prayers for a quick and just resolution to this situation.

  • August 8, 2022 - Lightning Rod protection needed to maintain insurance coverage is being re-installed today, costing approximately $10,000. Discussions continuing with the Diocese of Baton Rouge regarding reimbursement for costs of damages and replacement.

  • June 20, 2022 - The roof replacement, including the bell tower, has been completed! As for the financing of the project, the cost of replacement (approximately $75,000) has been borne by the parish through the Building Fund. The payment for damaged roofs (here and elsewhere in the diocese) is going to litigation. It is hoped that at the end of that we will see the reimbursement of costs of the damages and replacement.

  • June 9, 2022 - Cribbs Inc. contacted the parish and informed us that we are clear to proceed with the replacement of the church roof beginning Monday, June 13! Weather permitting, work should take just under a week to complete both the bell tower and body of the church.

  • May 16, 2022 - plans are proceeding for Cribbs Inc. to replace the church roof; the financing of the project is still unclear but the need is urgent, so the work will begin with the hope that litigation will enable us to receive reimbursement for the cost of the damages.

  • May 2, 2022 - report from the April 4 visit was not written favorably toward the parish and additional assessments in response have been submitted by our representatives. Plans to proceed with the replacement of the roof are underway.

  • April 4, 2022 - Storms over the last three weeks have shown the effects of the damaged roof in the form of at least 6 leaks in the church. On April 3, representatives from the company responsible for the roof damage came, along with our insurance representatives and engineers, to survey the damaged roof, observe the water intrusion damage, and make assessments for moving forward. A meeting is to be held in two weeks with diocesan officials and the company to continue to work toward resolution of the issues.

  • March 21, 2022 - we are still awaiting response and action on the part of the roofing company. Two spots of water damage that has developed in the last month have been reported to the insurance company.

  • January 2022 - documents of damages have been submitted and discussions are being held with the parish’s insurance company and the roofing company to rectify the situation and replace the roof.
